ABOUT HOME SCHOOL CAMP....
Camp Cavell is a beautiful facility located on 1800 feet of Lake Huron shoreline in the thumb of Michigan. We are just 25 miles north of Port Huron, and 4.5 miles north of the little town of Lexington.
Students come with a parent or adult who is responsible for their care. While students attend sessions with other campers their own age, the adults and younger brothers and sisters join in on activities organized just for them. You can sign up individually or come as a group! Science class content will be sensitive to the belief of the participants.
For students, this week is filled with activities that will focus on science, adventure and fun. Students are divided by age in groups of 10 - 12, and travel to sessions together. Students will be challenged to work together to solve problems, learn more about the world through hands on science projects, and strengthen their self-confidence through challenge activities.
Other family members will have time to explore camp and drop in on activities just for them! Programs include hayrides, beach hunts, meet the animals, arts & crafts and more. In the evening we will all come together for fun “All Camp” activities and campfires! We organize the program, do the cooking and the dishes; you just come and enjoy!
CABINS:
We have comfortable heated cabins that sleep 8 – 10 people, with twin size beds, electricity and a bathroom with a shower in each cabin. We will put families together with children the same age and for older kids the same sex. You may certainly request to be with another family, just note it on your registration form. If you gather 8 –10 people you can reserve a entire cabin. You must bring along bedding, soap and towels.
ACTIVITIES:
Sample Student Sessions:
Science, Technical Tree Climbing, Orienteering, Kayaking, Nature, and Stream Exploration. In shorter sessions students must choose between programs.
Sample Family & Open Activities:
Parachute games, hayrides, sports, crafts, horse back riding, massage, pre-school club room, beach time, dig for the shipwreck, meet the animals, hikes, nature hunts, massage and more!

KAPERS, SERVICE PROJECTS & COMMUNITY LIVING:
At camp we all come together to live and work in a little friendly community. Everyone pitches in to do Camp kapers, service projects and other “community” tasks.
KAPERS – are chores like feeding animals, setting tables, recycling cans, weeding the garden, putting up the flag and leading songs.
SERVICE PROJECTS – include cleaning off the wheelchair ramp to the beach, clearing trails, building ramps, and general camp fix up.
COMMUNITY TASKS – are items such as organizing the campfire, skit night, or the tot lot. It might also be serving snack, baby sitting for parent’s night, or putting together a camp scrapbook!
Students can earn community service hours through these as well.
ARRIVE / DEPART:
FOUR or FIVE DAY: Arrival is between 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. and departure is after 2:00 p.m. (please try and stay for the ending session at 1:00, it is an important way to bring the week to a close). Please check out of cabins by lunch.
THREE DAY:
MONDAY ARRIVAL: Arrival is between 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. and departure is after 12:00 noon (after brunch and an ending session). Please check out of cabins by brunch.
WEDNESDAY ARRIVAL: Arrival is between 1:00 - 2:00 a.m. and departure is at 2:00 p.m. after lunch and a closing session. Please check out of cabins by lunch.
YOU ARE WELCOME to stay and enjoy the beach the rest of the day!
MEALS:
We serve good wholesome meals family style. Volunteers from your week choose the menu and we try to combine parent choices with lots of kid choices. We can also serve vegetarian choices that include chicken or turkey, or other items without the red meat. If you need supplemental foods you are welcome to bring them along (refrigerator available). Please let us know if you have special needs we can help with.
BRING A SNACK TO SHARE:
It is a tradition with our family programs that each family brings a snack to share! They are put out at certain times during the day when we might need a bit of a pick up.
CAMP STORE
The camp store will carry T-shirts, souvenirs, stationery, flashlights, postcards, toothpaste, stamps and more!
TELEPHONE CALLS:
Cell phones do not always work at camp although most people can find a spot in camp where they do work to make outgoing calls. We are on the eastern edge of most towers and are sometimes picked up by Canadian towers (check when you get home and ask your cell phone company to take them off your bill). We have an answering machine and will gladly deliver messages.
VISITORS:
Please arrange for visitors ahead of time with the camp office. If visitors stay for a meal or program we ask that you cover this portion of the camp fees.
GROUND RULES:
Please no alcohol, illegal substances, firearms or unlawful items on camp property.
We ask that smokers use designated areas and there is no smoking in cabins.
We ask that participants & visitors sign in and out on the office door in case of an emergency.
AGES & ACCESSIBILITY:
You are welcome to bring any age campers to camp. Families find that young ones usually only hold out the pace for two or three days. We do have booster chairs, cheerios, and microwaves for bottle heating, but no high chairs or cribs. All of our main buildings, cabins, and beach areas are ramped and accessible. Please let us know if you have special needs, we will be glad to work with you!

The camp fee includes meals and lodging. The only additional fees are membership, horseback riding, massage and some of the arts & craft kits.
